This Kit has been developed as a tool to help build relationships and partnerships between the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities so we can more fully embrace the cultural diversity of our Aboriginal community, whilst addressing social disadvantage and share in the economic growth of the Central Coast.
‘Walking Together’, is a tool to help make things happen. It is designed to assist Aboriginal communities and organisations, government agencies and the non-Aboriginal community sector to:
Better understand the benefits of partnering with each other;
Set out how to approach potential partners, built on respect and trust;
Know “who’s who” in the Aboriginal community;
Understand the infrastructure of Aboriginal organisations;
Know how to raise your profile in the Aboriginal community; and
Know the importance of Elders and understand that “Elders” is a term of respect and does not signify recognition of age.
Clearly, the time is right for Aboriginal people and the non-Aboriginal sector to work together for the benefit of all Central Coast community members.
It is hoped the Kit will prove to be a useful tool and an introduction to the development of effective and productive relationships and partnerships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities, whilst promoting access to services on the Central Coast.
‘Walking Together’ has identified and addressed such issues on the importance of why we should partner, who the partners are and how to partner. In addition the Kit provides examples of current partnerships and other sources of information.
The Kit is intended as a guide only. Potential partners are encouraged to seek more formal advice from local Aboriginal organisations when developing their own partnerships and projects.
